Rajani, a lesser-known actress who appears in supporting roles in Kannada films, has lodged a complaint with the women’s police station here, accusing Congress activist Kumar of attempting to rape her.

According to the police, Rajani, wife of Naveen Kumar and a native of Hassan, had come to Shivamogga last week for the shooting of a Kannada film titled ‘Bisilu Kudure’. Congress activist Kumar, claiming to be a film producer, met her at night in a house at Gopala in the city. He reportedly offered her the lead role in his next film. During the conversation, he attempted to rape her, but her film crew rescued her, she told the police.

However, Kumar told Superintendent of Police, Ravi D Channannavar, on Wednesday that Rajani had been blackmailing and harassing him mentally. He also denied the rape allegations made by the actress.

Speaking to Deccan Herald over the phone, Superintendent of Police Channannavar said, “The case was registered under Sections 354 and 506 at the women’s police station on May 22. The suspect, Kumar, has also submitted a complaint to me. So, we will investigate both the complaints thoroughly and conduct an impartial probe.”

The issue seems to have taken a political turn with the BJP Yuva Morcha demanding the arrest of Kumar.
