A Tata Sumo was chased by nine PCR vans and intercepted near Connaught Place after it rammed into an Excise officer’s vehicle and tried to speed away.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 42 cartons of illicit liquor, police said.
The driver of the Tata Sumo has been identified as 26-year-old Satish, a resident of East Vinod Nagar.

Even as police have arrested him for smuggling liquor, the owner of the illicit alcohol is yet to be identified.

Satish was nabbed on Panchkuian Road near Connaught Place during the wee hours of Monday.

Police said the chase and arrest involved high drama.

It all began when some police personnel in a PCR van stationed near Vijay Chowk noticed the SUV ram into a Toyota Innova being driven by an Excise Department official.

The Sumo driver immediately sped away from the accident spot which led to the policemen suspecting something more than a road accident.

The PCR van personnel launched a chase for the Sumo even as they alerted other PCR vans in the region and asked them to help intercept the speeding vehicle.

In no time, there were a total of nine PCR vans chasing the Sumo which was allegedly being driven in a rash manner.

While trying to escape, the Sumo driver even rammed into police barricades.
The vehicle was finally intercepted near Lady Hardinge Medical College.

A total of 42 cartons of liquor, including 23 of foreignwhisky and the rest country-made liquor, were found in the vehicle.

The driver told police that he was carrying the liquor from Iffco Chowk in Gurgaon to Noida for delivery.

The liquor and the vehicle were seized, and Satish was arrested. A case has been registered with Mandir Marg police station.
