New courses in SGTB Khalsa, St Stephen's from 2016-17

Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College will offer BSc (Hons) in forensic science, while St Stephen’s college may start Political Science (Hons) from the academic session 2016-17.

Having been approved by the Delhi University standing committee on courses last week, the new programmes in varsity-affiliated colleges will now be placed before the academic council and executive council for approval.

Nachiketa Singh, member of DU’s standing committee on courses, said, “Many colleges had been demanding these courses. So after college inspections, approvals and recommendations to many courses were given.”

According to the recommendations, while Shivaji College, SGTB Khalsa College and Shri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College have received in-principle nod to start BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, Ramanujan College and Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences have been given approval to start BSc in Computer Science with Statistics.

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College and Ramanujan College have been given approval to start Bachelor of Business Studies course.

However, a similar request from Ambedkar College was turned down by the committee.
In social sciences, BA (Hons) in Psychology will be offered at Bharti College and Applied Psychology in Ramanujan College.

Sources in the university said delberations were held on giving new courses to colleges funded by the Delhi government, where teacher appointments have been stalled till governing bodies in the colleges are “fully constituted”.

“Some discussion was held in this regard because it doesn’t make sense for colleges to get new courses without teaching faculty. But the same was also held in light of other colleges too. The idea was to recommend new courses for colleges that are ready to tackle more students and have requisite infrastructure and teaching faculty,” a senior official said.
