They were once elegant pieces of jewellery that graced the royalty. But today, tiara has become a versatile accessory and is sported for almost every special occasion by the youngsters.

Modern tiaras are not grand or diamond-studded, but  subtle and innovative, which is precisely why they have become such an important hair accessory.

The old notion of the tiaras — bridal crown — is replaced by the new-age chic look with a modern, traditional and contemporary touch — all at the same time.

Jaya, the entrepreneur of Chotee makes elegant tiaras and calls them ‘Feltease’. “They are made from felt and hence the name,” she says. While the tiaras one gets in conventional stores are made out of wires (not very friendly when it comes to adjusting the sizes), Chotee’s tiaras are different. “The tiaras that I make have a strap at the back and they can be easily adjusted. They don’t leave a mark on the forehead, unlike the ones you get in stores,” she says.

Designed with floral inspirations, the tiaras available at Chotee’s even have butterflies, twigged flowers and has influences from birds too.

“The feltease tiaras I make are inspired by nature,” she says.
Available at a minimum price of Rs 200, these tiaras can be worn on any occasion including weddings, parties, baby shower and everything that is fancy. “They give you a very ‘princess’ look,” she says while adding that “they are unbreakable and very comfortable.

They can be a multipurpose accessory as they can be worn as belts, chains and hair-bands.” These tiaras are  fashionable and can enhance your look with minimum expenditure. ‘Accessory Funk’ is another quirky accessory store that is over two years old. The tiaras made here are trendy and have a classy touch. “I love accessorising myself with flowers, whether it's an apparel, a jewellery or a hair accessory. Music festivals were nearer and I wanted to get a new style and flaunt my hair. Having the Boho look in mind, I started picking up the flowers I had in stock and thought of making a tiara,”  says Radhika, the entrepreneur of ‘Accessory Punk’.

She has a large collection of cute accessories — two-way head piece, flower crowned tiaras, head chains with pearls and studs— that can be worn on loose hair, styled in an elaborate updo or slipped into a simple braid. She says, “A woman's hair is her glory and tiaras just add to the beauty of your hair and face. I have long hair and there are so many things I can do with it to make it look different. Tiaras add to the beauty of whichever way I choose to wear my hair on any day. The flower crowns, remind me of hippies. They can be worn during a cocktail party, brunch, music concerts, even weddings. The flower crowns are a natural way to combine the beauty of nature with your own personal style.”

She follows her heart in designing these unique pieces and says, “I don't follow any trend. I believe that if something suits you and makes you look pretty, you should go ahead and wear it. I always tell my customers to never go by trend. If you think you look pretty and that accessory suits you well enough, then go ahead without giving it a thought.”

With these little accessories turning more innovative by the day, the scrunchies and  clips are becoming a thing of the past.

Ashitha Gowda, a fashionista who keeps herself updated, says, “You can call me a hoarder of these elegant jewellery pieces. They suit various occasions and a variety of attires. Hair-do would not have been so much fun, if not for the tiara trend.”
