The unauthorised colonies of New Ashok Nagar suffers from basic amenities of hospitals and dispensaries, points out a study by the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC).

With no health infrastructure in place, residents have to be rushed to either Noida or Mayur Vihar.

The Commission has proposed there is a need to develop hospitals, two maternity homes and nine dispensaries in the area.

There is also facility for dispensary for animals.
There is also an immediate need to redevelop the educational infrastructure here.
The schools which are running in double shifts in the area are unable to cope with the demand of space and nuber of students in the area.

“There is also a lack of other facilities like public parks, maidans, banquet halls and barat ghars in the area,” said a senior DUAC official.

There is no park or green existing in the unplanned area. With dense housing and commercial areas mushrooming in the area, the colony has seen vertical growth.

The Commission has now proposed improvement in the Ghazipur drain.
“There is a need for development on the banks of Ghazipur drain and Hindol Canal. The green space need to be developed between these two points. The roads need to be redesigned so that parking areas and pedestrian routes can be created,” said the official.

Residents’ suggestions
The Commission has held meetings with stakeholders in the colony who have also pointed out the need for public transport like local bus services, removal of encroachments and improvement of the road sections.

The residents have also spoken of the need for open spaces for children.
With major parts of the colony being unauthorised, there is lack of availability of basic services like sewer lines, drainage and garbage disposal systems.

Untreated sewage flows into open drains in the area. The unsanitary conditions in the colony also adds to the burden of Yamuna in terms of water pollution.

There is also absence of proper drainage system. “Open drains which carry sewafe get mixed up with the rainwater and lead to extremely unhygienic conditions. Another basic amenity like garbage disposal system is also not in place,” said the official.

The Commission has proposed proper sewage system infrastructure in the area.
It has also listed out other suggestions like the need to improve the housing system and the need to decongest the area.
