Undertrial escapes

An undertrial, who had been arrested for the murder of his child, escaped from the sub-jail on Tuesday.

Prashanth Linganagoud Patil (24), a resident of Hulluru village in Ron taluk, was found missing from the jail after he had lunch with his fellow prisoners. The authorities combed the entire prison and also pumped out water in the sump with the premise that he might have fallen into the water sump.

However, the search did not yield any results. The Superintendent of the Dharward Central Prison P S Ramesh and other higher officials visited the jail in the night to investigate the matter. Patil, who had an inter-religious marriage, had a two-year-old daughter named Ankita. The couple often fought over allegations of adultery. Fed up with the constant fights, his wife Shainaz left home and moved to Bengaluru to work at a private company.

Angered by this, Patil had murdered his child and was arrested on April 6 this year. “We are not sure how the undertrial escaped. It is possible that he might have escaped during the lunch. A complaint has been lodged with the Betageri police,” said K S Manvi, Superintendent of the sub-jail.
