<p>A criminal was shot at when he attacked a Delhi Police constable with a knife while being chased in south Delhi’s Jangpura late on Friday. Constable Rajesh, posted with Hazrat Nizamuddin police station, shot Sanjay in the thigh.<br /><br />Police said Sanjay has involvement in several cases of snatching.<br />“Sanjay had slashed Rajesh with the knife on being overpowered. Rajesh was forced to open fire in self-defence,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Mandeep Singh Randhawa.</p>.<p>The sequence of events began after police arrested 21-year-old Ashram-resident Shemwal on Friday in a case of causing hurt in committing robbery.<br /><br />Shemwal’s interrogation revealed that he and his accomplices were involved in several cases of snatching filed with Hazrat Nizamuddin police station.</p>.<p>Late on Friday, a police team, including Rajesh, planned to take Shemwal to market areas in south-east Delhi to identify and nab his accomplices.<br /><br />Head constable Nasir Hussain and constables Rajesh, Satish and Ravinder left the police station with Shemwal in a police vehicle at 10.15 pm.<br /><br />“We were at Shastri Market near Jangpura when Shemwal identified three youths standing there as his accomplices Sanjay, Dinesh and Shahid,” constable Rajesh told Deccan Herald.<br /><br />The police team called for backup and tried to apprehend the three youths.<br />“As we were there in uniform, Shemwal‘s accomplices saw us moving towards them due to which they tried to flee in different directions,” Rajesh added.</p>.<p>Rajesh chased Sanjay and managed to overpower him near a temple on Mathura Road.<br />It is alleged that on being overpowered, Sanjay abused Rajesh and whipped out a knife from his trouser’s pocket. He went on to slash Rajesh with the knife on the chest and right hand.<br />Rajesh was forced to move away, but he repeatedly told Sanjay to surrender.</p>.<p>“Sanjay attacked Rajesh several times and kept on waving the knife. Rajesh claimed to have warned Sanjay, but he did not surrender,” Randhawa added.<br />Rajesh was carrying his 9 MM service pistol, which he used to open fire. Sanjay was hit in the right thigh.<br /><br />Hearing the gunshot, Hussain rushed to the spot and helped Rajesh to overpower Sanjay. Soon, more staff from local police and police control room vans also reached at the spot.<br /><br />Rajesh and Sanjay underwent treatment at the AIIMS trauma centre.<br />A case of attempt to murder under Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been filed with Hazrat Nizamuddin police station. Sanjay’s family lives at Harkesh Nagar village in Okhla.</p>
