A criminal was shot at when he attacked a Delhi Police constable with a knife while being chased in south Delhi’s Jangpura late on Friday. Constable Rajesh, posted with Hazrat Nizamuddin police station, shot Sanjay in the thigh.

Police said Sanjay has involvement in several cases of snatching.
“Sanjay had slashed Rajesh with the knife on being overpowered. Rajesh was forced to open fire in self-defence,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Mandeep Singh Randhawa.

The sequence of events began after police arrested 21-year-old Ashram-resident Shemwal on Friday in a case of causing hurt in committing robbery.

Shemwal’s interrogation revealed that he and his accomplices were involved in several cases of snatching filed with Hazrat Nizamuddin police station.

Late on Friday, a police team, including Rajesh, planned to take Shemwal to market areas in south-east Delhi to identify and nab his accomplices.

Head constable Nasir Hussain and constables Rajesh, Satish and Ravinder left the police station with Shemwal in a police vehicle at 10.15 pm.

“We were at Shastri Market near Jangpura when Shemwal identified three youths standing there as his accomplices Sanjay, Dinesh and Shahid,” constable Rajesh told Deccan Herald.

The police team called for backup and tried to apprehend the three youths.
“As we were there in uniform, Shemwal‘s accomplices saw us moving towards them due to which they tried to flee in different directions,” Rajesh added.

Rajesh chased Sanjay and managed to overpower him near a temple on Mathura Road.
It is alleged that on being overpowered, Sanjay abused Rajesh and whipped out a knife from his trouser’s pocket. He went on to slash Rajesh with the knife on the chest and right hand.
Rajesh was forced to move away, but he repeatedly told Sanjay to surrender.

“Sanjay attacked Rajesh several times and kept on waving the knife. Rajesh claimed to have warned Sanjay, but he did not surrender,” Randhawa added.
Rajesh was carrying his 9 MM service pistol, which he used to open fire. Sanjay was hit in the right thigh.

Hearing the gunshot, Hussain rushed to the spot and helped Rajesh to overpower Sanjay. Soon, more staff from local police and police control room vans also reached at the spot.

Rajesh and Sanjay underwent treatment at the AIIMS trauma centre.
A case of attempt to murder under Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been filed with Hazrat Nizamuddin police station. Sanjay’s family lives at Harkesh Nagar village in Okhla.
