The BBMP on Friday informed the High Court that it has used only 10 per cent of Rs 30 crore collected as garbage cess till date.

The Palike administrator T M Vijayabhaskar submitted to the Court that more than 400 tonnes of waste was segregated after a public notification was issued to segregate garbage at source. While hearing a batch of petitions on garbage disposal, in the absence of advocates, a division bench comprising Justices N Kumar and B V Nagarathna observed that any number of orders would not make sense as there were no proper garbage processing units at present. During the hearing, the plight of villagers in Mavallipura was brought to the Court’s notice. It was submitted that despite conducting health camps, villagers suffering from ailments had not received treatment. They have to visit hospitals and are made to run pillar to post for treatment.

The bench directed the BBMP administrator that a ‘regulatory system’ should come into existence, so that even if another officer takes over as the BBMP commissioner or administrator, the villagers are not neglected. The bench directed the administrator to visit Mavallipura to monitor garbage disposal and to check on the villagers’ health and well-being.
