For the uplifting of Safai Karmacharis who are engaged in cleanliness of different parts of the town, a Safai Karmachari Development Corporation will be established, said  Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Commission Chairman Narayana.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, he said there are over eight lakh to ten lakh Safai karmacharis engaged in cleanliness work in hospitals and offices in the state.

The corporation would provide better health care and education to the children and to make them financially sound. The decision on the constitution of the corporation will be taken in the next Cabinet meeting.

“To assess the condition of Safai karmacharis, I have already visited 20 districts in the state. I will visit the remaining 10 districts shortly. A detailed report on the prevailing condition of Safai Karmacharis will be submitted to the State government,” he said.

The chairman said the civic workers serving on contract basis across the state are not getting the minimum wages that are entitled to them. The contractor fails to provide even PF facilities to the labourers.

“I have directed the urban local bodies to suspend such tender and black list such contractor who fails to provide minimum wages to the civic workers,” he said and added that he has noticed such incidents in Kodagu as well. Chief officers have been directed to set right the loopholes within a month.

The Commission Chairman said there are plans to suspend the contract system for civic workers and implement Haryana model wherein the government will only pay the civic workers.

The minimum wages proposed Rs 14,000 along with health care facilities. The decision will be taken in the Cabinet meeting.
