Gone are the days when shoes were just an item of footwear intended to protect and comfort the feet during various activities. Over time footwear have evolved and is now considered an important accessory which complements your fashion sense and style.

As sultry summer picks up pace in the city, so does the trend of the new summer shoes, popularly known as Espadrilles. Originated in the 14th century, espadrilles are the new popular, casual, light canvas shoes with a plaited fibre sole made of cotton or jute rope.

The Spanish-origin shoes, once worn by the peasants, have now gained popularity and are worn both by men and women during the spring and summer months. The USP of these shoes is the use of handmade materials such as hemp or jute to create strong, lightweight, flexible and comfortable soles and the uppers of the shoes are made of cotton giving you a variety of colours and prints to choose from.

New styles of espadrilles have flooded the market with updated fabrics, colours and accents, but these still remain true to the authentic traditional shoes. Apart from the flat shoes, espadrille sandals are also quite popular among women.

Stylists suggest that espadrilles be paired with any combination of casual outfits like jeans, skirts, shorts or cute summer dresses. They counterbalance and match all types of garments effectively because they are generally made of natural fibres.

Before you pick a pair of espadrilles consider the height of the sole -- flat soles offer a casual look while the espadrille wedge heels look dressy. With ankle straps or without, open toe or closed, it’s your call. Also, look for extra details that can add more fun to your outfit.

“I love how comfortable and casual these shoes look with almost every outfit. And since the soles are made of jute they can be paired and matched with everything,” Mansi Dhata, a fashion enthusiast tells Metrolife.

It’s a myth that these shoes are only meant for women. Men can also add a pair of
espadrilles to their shoe rack to achieve an informal, casual summer look. They can style them with their shorts, half pants or a casual pair of jeans for a summer
 afternoon.

“I prefer wearing a pair of espadrilles than summer sandals. They are comfortable and yet look fashionable with a casual outfit,” says the 24-year-old Nishant Taneja who loves experimenting with new fashion trends.

While Jimmy Choo launches a new collection of espadrilles in the international market you can find your perfect pair of espadrilles at Zara, Saint G, Mast and Harbour, Forever 21 to name some. Online fashion portals also have a variety of espadrilles available in various shapes, colours and sizes.

Ditch your old boring pair of shoes this summer and experiment with the espadrilles that are equally comfortable, in vogue and are taking over the high street fashion.
