Last Updated 25 June 2015, 20:00 IST

The High Court on Thursday directed the State government to comply with its order to grant permission for English medium schools in the State within a week.

Hearing a petition by the Karnataka Unaided Schools Managements Association (Kusma) and Karnataka State Minority Institutes Management Federation (KSMIMF), the division bench comprising Justice N Kumar and Justice Srinivase Gowda has granted the required time to comply with the order after the State government sought more time.

The State government filed an affidavit regarding the status to grant permission and said that it needs time to get the files from Dharwad and Kalaburagi division, especially for schools under KSMIMF seeking permission to teach in English medium.

The petitioners have filed a petition seeking contempt action against the State Primary Education department for not according permission to English medium schools.

They contended that the High Court had directed the Government to grant permission for English medium schools and the same was upheld by the Supreme Court full bench.

However, despite this, the Government has failed to comply with both the orders and sought to initiate action against the State government. Kusma has 1,900 schools under it and  KSMIMF has 550 schools under it.
