Would've done the same in Sushma's place: Shanti Bhushan

Dismissing allegations of public conflict in the way Sushma Swaraj acted in Lalit Modi’s case, former law minister Shanti bhushan on Friday said he would have done the same had he been in the External Affairs Minister’s position.

“IF I were in her place, I would have done the same,” Bhushan told CNN-IBN on Friday. “How was it hurting the public interest if she used her influence with the British for getting a travel visa for Lalit Modi to visit his ailing wife?”

The lawyer made the remarks in an interview on the 40th anniversary of the imposition of emergency in 1975.

Bhushan pleaded the case of Rajnarain against Indira Gandhi in Allahabad High Court, which ruled the election petition in favour of the socialist leader and disqualified Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership triggering the emergency.

The senior Bhushan differed from his son Prashant who had demanded Sushma Swaraj’s resignation.
