Two more farmers commit suicide

Two debt-ridden farmers committed suicide in separate incidents in Haveri and Mysuru districts on Tuesday.

Ashoka Hanumanthappa Madiwalara (45), farmer from Mydur village in Ranebennur taluk of Haveri district ended his life by consuming poison. He is said to have loans totalling to Rs 10.68 lakh at a bank. He had borrowed money for purchasing a tractor and also to grow crops. Since he defaulted in repayment of the loan, the bank had seized the vehicle around six months ago. Madiwalara got the vehicle released after paying the instalments with the money he borrowed from private persons. Around two months later, the bank had again issued a notice asking him to repay the loan. He had performed the marriage of his daughter by borrowing money in April this year.

The farmer had been to his land on Monday night and did not return home the next day. He was found dead at the blackbuck sanctuary near Gangapura Cross. His wife has lodged a complaint.

Krishna (31) of Singamaranahalli in Hunsur taluk of Mysuru district committed suicide by hanging himself at his house. The farmer, who owns 10 acres of land jointly with his brothers, had loans totalling to Rs 20 lakh, according to the complaint lodged by his wife, Shailaja. The borewell which he had sunk in his land had also failed, villagers said. The body was handed over to the family after the postmortem at Bilikere government hospital.
