Interview
Bengaluru boy Thomas Kurian, an alumnus of the city’s St. Joseph’s Boy’s High School, is the president, product development, of Oracle Corporation since January this year. Celebrated as a smart technologist, Kurian, 47, is reportedly the blue-eyed boy of chairman Larry Ellison.

None of this was in evidence in Bengaluru on Thursday, where he came across as an unassuming and down-to-earth person in an interaction with Deccan Herald’s N V Vijayakumar and other media persons.

Excerpts:
On the explosion of data:Last year witnessed the creation of more data than ever in the history of human computing. Since the era of computing in 1940 till 2014, certain amount of data was produced. That has been surpassed in the year 2014. It gives more opportunity for Oracle in data management and analytics.

On the global demand for servers by 2020: Oracle right now has 19 data centres around the globe. We are expecting huge traffic of data in the years to come. We will add most likely six to seven data centres.

On starting data centres in India: The company is exploring opportunities. If demand grows substantially, we are open to this idea
.
On the focus areas of Oracle: We are focusing on five primary areas of activities, viz. hardware and systems, information management, application infrastructure, business application, and cloud computing. Oracle would like to provide all users with access to Oracle software even if they don’t have access to data centres and skilled people. Cloud computing has brought in transformative changes in the delivery of services.

We have brought an integrated portfolio of software which can be divided into three pieces — SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service), and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service).

On Oracle’s cloud business:IaaS via cloud is a brand new business model which started in 2006 in product development and entered the market in 2012. We had a total revenue of $2 billion in 2014, and is growing exponentially. We are the fastest growing cloud vendor in the world. Some 70 million people log in to the Oracle cloud, and last month we processed 32 billion transactions.
