Delhi police on Sunday claimed to have busted a gang involved in a series of robberies, mainly in south-west district and Gurgaon area of the NCR, with the arrest of five persons.

Acting on a tip-off that a gang led by a 26-year-old girl is active in the south-west area of the city, a special team arrested the five accused and seized four cars, a countrymade pistol with two live rounds, 14 mobile phones, two laptops, and jewellery.

The gang was led by Dimple, a resident of Uttam Nagar, and included Rohit, Amit, Palak, Wasim, and Sohail, DCP, south-west district, R A Sanjeev said, adding, they carried more than 11 robberies.

Dimple, along with Rohit worked in a local news channel and in 2014 the duo was caught by Govind Puri Police Station in a robbery case and was released after few days. They later befriended the rest of the accused. The gang already had one car and it carjacked three other vehicles from Janakpuri, Gurgaon, and Rohini for carrying out the crimes.

How they operated

Explaining the modus operandi of the gang, the DCP said, Amit used to drive the vehicle, Wasim and Sohail used to carry firearms and Dimple carried a knife. Dimple was present in all the incidents to save them from any suspicion or objection by police if they were caught during night. They also used ‘PRESS’ stickers on their vehicle to avoid suspicion.

Dimple and Palak used ‘burkhas’ to hide their identity. Code words were used between them to signal the others. Dimple was called as ‘Aslam Bhai’ by all in the gang. ‘Bade bhai ko le aana’ meant carry firearms and ‘pair mein dard hai’ (pain in legs) meant one is caught by police. They used to sell robbed jewellery in the market. In June 2015, they robbed gold jewellery and dollars at Panipat from one American citizen, Sanjeev said.

Easy money and a lavish lifestyle were the main reasons for committing the crimes, he added.  The police initially arrested Rohit and Sohail on July 20 and during the course of investigation Dimple, Palak, and receiver of the robbed jewellery, Rajkumar, were arrested.

During interrogation, Dimple confessed the crime and said she was “inspired” by Bollywood movie ‘Bunty and Bublee’ and wanted to “carve a niche” for herself.
