Karnataka claim under-25 crown

State pip Kerala on bonus points
Last Updated 27 January 2010, 17:35 IST

With their win against Hyderabad, Karnataka tallied 19 points and were tied with Kerala, who too logged an identical number of points after the final round of matches.
Karnataka, however, were declared winners as they had four bonus points as against Kerala’s three.

Karnataka, with four wins, had lost to eventual runners-up Kerala and conceded a point as the latter won with a bonus point in an earlier match league match.

Both teams finished with four wins apiece and 19 points each, and the champions thus had to be decided on the ‘bonus-point’ tie-breaker system.

In their last match, Karnataka piled up 240 all out in 46.1 overs, R Jonathan top-scoring with 78. Skipper Ganesh Satish struck 52 while Devraj Patil chipped in with 44. Hyderabad, chasing a challenging total, were not up to scratch as they managed a paltry 137 all out in 39.3 overs to suffer a 103-run loss.

The part-time leg-spin of Amit Verma (4/18) and the off-spin of Ryan Ninan (3/28) did the trick for Karnataka. Left-arm spinner KP Appanna too picked up two wickets.

Brief scores: Karnataka: 240 all out in 46. 1 overs (Devraj Patil 44, R Jonathan 78, Ganesh Satish 52, Sunil Raju 30; Paramveer Singh 4-20, Vishal Sharma 3-50, Danny Derek Prince 2-45) bt Hyderabad: 137 all out in 39.3 overs (J Anshul 30, KP Appanna 2-30, Ryan Ninan 3-28, Amit Verma 4-18).
