The Union Urban Development Ministry has forwarded the Karnataka government’s proposal to Union Finance Ministry for permission to seek Rs 5,500 crore loan from Japan to implement drinking water project in Bengaluru.

“The Urban Development Ministry has cleared the project and the proposal has been sent to the Finance Ministry for final approval”, Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu told Deccan Herald here on Friday.

A delegation led by Union Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Monday met Naidu here and requested him to give early approval to the Karnataka’s proposal seeking Rs 5,500 crore loan from Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) to take up a project to supply drinking water to 110 villages in Bengaluru.

Explaining the urgency of the project, Gowda said the project will help to provide drinking water to 110 villages that were added to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike limits in 2007.

According to the plan, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will implement the project to supply Cauvery water to 110 villages in six zones-Bytarayanapura, Mahadevapura, Bommanahalli, Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Dasarahalli-spread across 245 sq km in BBMP limit.
