In a shocking incident, a woman was teased and molested, but she successfully repulsed a rape attempt, inside a running local train on Thursday night.

The victim, an MBA hailing from Pune, had boarded the Borivali-Churchgate train from the Malad suburbs on the Western Railway. The incident occurred between Grant Road and Charni Road stations – as the train was a few kilometres away from its terminal point.

The Mumbai Police and Government Railway Police are investigating the matter – and the CCTV footage of the youth has been circulated.

Seeing the girl alone, the boy got into the ladies’ compartment and attempted to overpower and rape her. But she resisted and cried for help. The man tried to smother her and later tore her clothes. The boy then jumped from the local as it was slow – and vanished in the darkness.

The terrified girl was helped by some local people at the Marine Lines station – who took her to the railway police.

The girl was travelling in the coach next to the motorman. However, there was no police personnel – which is mandatory post 11 pm. “We are looking into the issue and investigating it in detail,” a railway police official said.

The GRP has booked a suo motu complaint against the offender under Sections 162 (entering carriage or other place reserved for females) and 145(b) (committing any nuisance or act of indecency) of The Railways Act. Four teams have been formed to nab the man.
