Startups central for 'Make in India'

Last Updated 10 August 2015, 18:05 IST

Startups in the core manufacturing sectors are poised to play a crucial role in the success of ‘Make in India’ ambitions, said experts at a panel discussion at the 11th India Innovation Summit 2015 organised by CII here recently.

“Startups in the fields of telecom, defence manufacturing, automobile, Internet of Things (IoT), financial technology modules and mobile internet have immense potential to succeed in the scheme of ‘Make in India’,” said Siddhartha Das, general partner, VentureEast, addressing aspiring entrepreneurs during the discussion on ‘Entrepreneurship — Role of Startups towards Make in India’.

Kajal Shah, co-founder of automotive startup Adarin ET revealed that her startup procured funding with great difficulty. AdarinET is a Green Eco-friendly mobility startup based in Bengaluru and was started in 2013 by two co-founders, Kajal Shah (IIT Bombay), and Saurabh Markandeya (IISc). “We have developed a hybrid vehicle technology called ‘Motomatic Hybrid Transmission (MHT)’, designed specifically for Indian conditions.

It not only increases fuel economy by 40 per cent, but also gives comfortable gearless driving experience. The Motomatic Hybrid technology is truly Made in India as it is possible to manufacture it 100 per cent in India,” Shah said.

On startups, Shah said, “Startups develop technologies and products at lesser cost and time compared with well-established industries.”

Cardiac Design Labs Founder & CEO Anand Madanagopal said, “Smaller hospitals and primary healthcare centres do not have the ability to detect or treat cardiac diseases.

Larger hospitals, while equipped with Holter monitors and event recorders, cannot diagnose events real-time and remotely. Given the scale of cardiac disease globally, there is an immediate requirement to detect the early onset of coronary artery disease. There is a need for both remote and real-time monitoring of cardiac events as they occur in existing patients.”

MIRCaM is the company’s solution for remote, real-time diagnostics. It comprises a body-worn unit, patient bedside unit, MIRCaM doctor’s terminal, and MIRCaM doctor’s mobile app.
