Fissures in TN parties over total prohibition

Last Updated 13 August 2015, 18:56 IST

The intensive campaign for total prohibition in Tamil Nadu, which gained momentum after Sasi Perumal’s death, is showing signs of fissure with various political parties holding separate demonstrations and agitations not presenting a cohesive front to ensure abolition of liquor in the state.

Though major oppositions including DMK led by M Karunanidhi, Congress, BJP and even Vaiko-led MDMK are pitching strongly for total prohibition in the state, these parties are organising demonstrations on their own.

The divide in political parties on total prohibition once again emerged on Thursday with DMDK led by actor politician Vijayakanth observing a day-long fast demanding implementation of total prohibition in the state did not make any impact on the public.

Likewise, last week, other smaller parties in Tamil Nadu including Vaiko’s MDMK and the VCK had called a dawn-to-dusk state-wide protest to seek liquor ban that failed to make an impact.

Though political outfits claim that they were getting huge support from the public, DMK also faced similar situation on August 10 with only its party cadre present during their dharna.

Now, the Congress announced that it would organise a “huge” hunger protest in all district headquarters on Friday for total prohibition. However, the AIADMK Government did not respond to any of these protest.
