Tamil Nadu has been ranked on top, with a share of over 15 per cent in the total 1.29 crore jobs generated in the registered manufacturing sector across India in 2012-13 and is closely followed by Maharashtra (14 per cent), a latest released research has said.

“Gujarat (10.5 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (9 per cent) and Karnataka (7 per cent) are the leading states in terms of job creation in the registered manufacturing sector across the country,” a paper on ‘Assessment of Employment in the Registered Manufacturing Industry’, prepared by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) said on Friday.

Besides, Tamil Nadu (1.2 per cent) and West Bengal (0.2 per cent) were the lone states that have recorded a positive year-on-year (YoY) growth rate, i.e. from 2011-12 to 2012-13, in employment generation in the manufacturing sector, while all other states registered a slump in this regard.

While Andhra Pradesh (12 per cent), Rajasthan (seven per cent), Maharashtra (five per cent), Karnataka (five per cent) and Uttar Pradesh (4.5 per cent) registered maximum decline in job generation YoY in manufacturing sector.

“Slowdown in performance of the manufacturing sector has had an impact on employment generation evidently, as the number of jobs created in India’s manufacturing sector had declined by about four per cent i.e. from 1.34 crore in 2011-12 to 1.29 crore in 2012-13,” highlighted the paper prepared by the ASSOCHAM Economic Research Bureau (AERB).

Food products (12 per cent), textiles (11 per cent), basic metals (eight per cent), apparel (seven per cent) and other non-metallic mineral products (seven per cent) were the top sectors accounting for the highest share in employment generated by the registered manufacturing sector as of 2012-13.
