An army jawan was beaten to death by some youths after he protested against them for passing lewd comments at a girl. Three persons were arrested in connection to the case.

The incident occurred in Meerut town, about 450 kilometres from here, on Thursday evening.

The braveheart, identified as Vedmitra Chaudhury, sustained serious injuries while fighting a dozen youths armed with rods and sticks.

He was admitted to an army hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
Chaudhary, 33, was with the engineering brigade of the army.

Police said the jawan protested on seeing two youths teasing the daughter of the owner of a local dairy where he had gone to buy milk.

He took them on and forced them to flee.

The duo, however, returned soon after with 10 more people armed with hockey sticks and iron rods.

Chaudhary, according to the eyewitnesses, fought valiantly but collapsed after being repeatedly hit by rods and sticks. The attackers left the spot soon after. Sadly, nobody came forward to his help.

Arrests
Three youths were arrested later and a massive manhunt had been launched to catch the others, the police said.

The girl later said the youths had been harassing her for several days and it had become difficult for her to even walk on the roads.

“That day they (molesters) crossed all limits...they forcibly held my hands,” she said.
The girl also  added: “None except the army jawan came to my help.”

The local police had earlier termed the incident as a fall out of an altercation over passage.

According to reports, Chaudhary was cremated with full military honours at his ancestral village of Titauli in Shamli district on Friday.
