Thieves attacked an Army officer who challenged them when they attempted to chop sandalwood from a tree at the Army guesthouse on Rest House Street, off Brigade Road, in the early hours of Sunday.

Around 3 am, a few men scaled the wall of the guesthouse and started chopping sandalwood.

Major Bharadwaj, 36, who was woken up by the noise, came out and saw the men cutting the tree with a hacksaw. He ran up to them shouting and tried to nab them. But the thieves attacked him and managed to flee, a senior police officer said. “The wall of the guesthouse is low and the thieves easily scaled it. Surprisingly, there was no guard at the place,” a senior police said. The thieves left behind some of the tools used in cutting the tree.

“These tools are from Tamil Nadu. A team of policemen is already on its way to Tamil Nadu to hunt for people involved in this incident,” the officer added.  A case has been registered at the Cubbon Park police station. A similar incident had taken place about two months ago and the police were able to hunt down the thieves in Andhra Pradesh and
Tamil Nadu.
