Tribute to a legend

Tribute to a legend

Soothing, soulful and heartwarming; these words best describe the vibe that lingered in JSS Auditorium recently. On the occasion of the 73rd birth anniversary of the late Sitar Nawaz Ustad Balekhan, Ustad Balekhan Memorial Trust organised a music concert that began with an invocation song by Anisa and Parveen, the daughters of Ustad Balekhan.

It was then time for a Hindustani vocal recital by Shivaleela Siddhaveere who was accompanied by Bhimashankar Bidnur on tabla and Mrityunjaya on harmonium. Shivaleela, tuning the tambura to her flawless voice, began with the recital of ‘yaman’ raga that set the mood for the evening.

Her performance was followed by a flute recital by Pandit Rakesh Chaurasia, who is the disciple of Padma Vibhushan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. He was accompanied by Pandit Radendra Nakod on tabla. The duo, with perfect rhythm and melodious tunes from the flute, was the highlight of the show. The audience hummed and tapped their feet and there was a rain of applause for the artistes performing.

The musical programme, which ended on a high note of the flute, was followed by the launch of a CD of Dasara songs sung by Rais and Hafiz Balekhan titled ‘Dasa Gana Sinchana’. Chief guest Pandit Indhudhar Nirody, after the CD launch, awarded a scholarship to a music student, Deepak Nagannavar, as part of the event. Every year, this scholarship is felicitated by the trust to an up-and-coming artiste in memory of Sitar Nawaz Ustad Balekhan.

A memorable event, it was a feast to the ears of all Hindustani classical music-lovers present. Shridar, a member of the audience, said, “There are not many events that promote classical music. It was a bliss to be here and witness the Hindustani music recitals. The City should encourage more such events.”

There were young listeners among the audience too who enjoyed the show. Shwetha, a college student, said, “I am a fan of classical music and I am training
myself in Hindustani classical. I was looking forward to this event and I am glad to have made it. I loved the flute performance by Pandit Rakesh Chaurasia.”
