To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the birth of social reformer and jurist B R Ambedkar, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) will take his ideas and writings to young men and women across Karnataka.

The Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) at NLSIU has published a primer on three of Ambedkar’s well-known works — The Annihilation of Caste, States and Minorities, Revolution and Counter-revolution in Ancient India — in Kannada. As many as 15,000 copies of the primer are ready for distribution among youth all over Karnataka, according to Prof S Japhet, director, CSSEIP.

“We want to do all this to mark Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary as well the 100th year of his graduation from Columbia University. Seminars, conferences and public meetings on Ambedkar will also be organised throughout the State. We plan to hold such events in at least five colleges in each district, and 50 cities throughout the State have been selected. We aim to reach out to 1.5 lakh students,” added Japhet.

Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, and passed his MA examination from Columbia University in 1915.

A total of 100 resource persons, including professors and activists, will help the cause across the State. Prominent scholars on Ambedkar such as Anand Teltumbde and Sukhadeo Thorat, a former chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), will join in too.

During the campaign, Ambedkar’s famous articles and works like ‘The Annihilation of Caste’ and other works will be released. “Ambedkar’s ideas are spread out in numerous volumes of his works and we have only brought out a simplified version of his basic thoughts and ideas that will be more comprehendible to the youth,” said V S Sreedhara of the DR Ambedkar Studies Centre at NLSIU. The initiative will be launched on September 8 at Government Arts and Science colleges in Bengaluru.
