Rongsen Jonathan cracked a quickfire 77 as Belagavi Panthers defeated Namma Shivamogga by five wickets to become the first team to book their play-off spot in the Karbonn Smart KPL IV tournament here on Saturday.
After restricting Shivamogga to 160/7 in 20 overs, Panthers rode on Jonathan’s 47-ball 77 (5x4, 5x6) to surpass the target in 18.4 overs at the SDNR Wadiyar ground.
Thanks to the win, Panthers remained at the top of the table with 9 points from five games while Shivamogga are third on six points from five matches.
Chasing a challenging total, the Panthers lost opening batsman Mayank Agarwal (12) in the fourth over with just 21 runs on board. Jonathan then joined hands with Abhishek Reddy (12) but the latter too departed without contributing much.
With skipper R Vinay Kumar too falling after making just 9 runs, Panthers seemed in a spot of bother at 62/3 in 9.1 overs. However, Jonathan then opened his arms before Praveen Dubey (13 balls, 34 runs) produced a cameo towards the end to power Panthers home.
Earlier, Shivamogga got off to a blazing start through opening batsman Saadiq Kirmani who smashed a 40-ball 56. However, the fall of three top-order batsmen, Stuart Binny (7), Shreyas Gopal (0) and Sadiq with the total at 100 changed the course of the match.
“I think self-belief is important and I believe in myself. I won the match for my team and my motto is self belief,” said Jonathan after receiving the man of the match award.
