BMTC to have GPS in all its buses

An app for passengers on the cards

Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) Managing Director Ekroop Caur on Saturday said that the BMTC will implement the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) under the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) project for its entire fleet of 6,500 buses.

Speaking at a press conference Caur said the system will be implemented by a private company, Trimax, which won the project through a tender called by the BMTC.

The entire intelligent services project is being undertaken with a  Rs 79-crore  budget over five years on Build-Operate-Transfer basis.

The money will be paid to the company only after the service has been implemented. The GPS will be fitted onto all the buses and a central control room will be able to monitor the entire operation of every single bus — ticketing, speed, behaviour of the crew, bus frequency, where the bus is stopping, whether driving is rash and when the bus is expected to come to a particular bus stop. The electronic control of the buses would increase the efficiency of services.

Another service, the electronic ticketing machine, will also be introduced this year on all BMTC buses. A mobile app is also being introduced to enable passengers to have all the information in their mobiles on every aspect of bus services from time of arrival to frequency of service.
