After the Modi government “capitulated” on the land acquisition ordinance, the Congress on Saturday kicked off victory celebrations to portray vice-president Rahul Gandhi as a farmers’ leader.

Hundreds of farmers gathered at the AICC headquarters here and burst crackers and expressed gratitude to Rahul and Congress president Sonia Gandhi for compelling the Modi government to withdraw the amendments to the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement law enacted by the UPA-II government.

“Modi-ji talks about democracy but does not talk about our farmers and labourers, who run this democracy. He forgets them,” Rahul told the farmers at a meeting at his mother’s residence.
The victory celebrations will culminate into a farmer’s rally at the Ramlila Maidan here on September 20. Earlier, the rally was planned to be held in Panipat in Haryana.

“This is the victory of the Congress. But it is the victory of farmers as well,” Rahul said as he went about interacting with the farmers.
