A 19-year-old engineering graduate drowned when a car in which he was travelling fell into a canal near Chunchi falls under Sathanur police limits of Ramanagara district on Sunday.

According to the police, the victim, Sagar, was a resident of Bommasanadra.
He, along with seven of his friends, had gone to Chunchi falls in a car. All of them are said to be aged around 18 to 20 years and were pursuing graduation in various colleges in the City.

Around 2 pm, they reached Chunchi falls and decided to go to the base of the falls in their car. The road which leads to the bottom, is very rugged and not motorable, but is only suitable for walking.

The students took the car and went to the base of the falls. After playing in the water, they tried to drive back in the car. However, the car could not move ahead as the road was very steep and narrow.

One of them, who was driving the car, accelerated hard which resulted in the car skidding off the road and falling to the left side into a canal, said the police.

The villagers living nearby heard a thud and found the car in the canal. Immediately, they jumped into the canal and rescued everyone except for Sagar, whose body was not found.

The police, who were informed, rushed to the spot, but could not trace Sagar’s body. The rescue operation was called off due to bad light and will be resumed on Monday morning, added the police.

A case has been registered in Sathanur police station.
