Rahul likely to visit State from Oct 5

All India Congress Committee Vice-President Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Karnataka between October 5 and 7, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Friday.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said the itinerary of Rahul Gandhi’s visit would be finalised soon. Sources in the Congress said Mandya and Haveri have witnessed high number of suicides by farmers and the issue had been highlighted in the report submitted to Rahul.

He may choose to visit both the districts or either, depending on the time he would devote. He may take out a padayatra for about 8 to 10 kms in villages which reported the deaths, sources said. It will be an interaction exercise with farmers to instill confidence in them who are facing problems due to drought.

There have been a spate of farmers’ suicide in the State following financial distress and crop loss due to drought. Rahul is also is likely to meet the families of some of the farmers who committed suicide.

Cabinet reshuffle

Siddaramaiah reiterated that the process of Cabinet reshuffle-cum-expansion would be completed by end of the month.The chief minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President G Parameshwara will be leaving for New Delhi on September 24 to hold discussion with the party high command ahead of the Cabinet rejig. AICC General Secretary in-charge of party affairs in Karnataka, Digvijay Singh,  who is on a personal visit to the United States, is expected to return to the national capital on September 21.
