BU PG students protest 'poor quality' food

Last Updated 21 September 2015, 21:19 IST

Around 400 postgraduate students of Bangalore University staged a demonstration in front of their hostel on Jnanabharathi campus on Monday night protesting against the ‘poor quality’ of food supplied to them and lack of facilities at the university-run hostel.

The students residing in PG Hostel-2 boycotted their dinner and sat on a dharna from 7 pm. They insisted that the university authorities should come to the spot and address their problems.

As no officials turned up, the Jnanabharathi police tried to pacify the students to withdraw the protest. However, they did not budge and continued to protest till midnight, said the local police.

The students alleged that officials were spending only a portion of the Rs 9 lakh that is released every month towards providing food to them. Besides, cleanliness is not maintained in the kitchen and dining halls, they claimed.

Most of the students staying in the hostel are from Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagara, Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts.
