A silly, bling-bling ride

Last Updated 02 October 2015, 19:49 IST

Singh is Bliing
Hindi (U/A), Cast: Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson, Lara Dutta
Director: Prabhu Deva

Thank you Prabhu Deva for Amy Jackson. Here is one heroine who breaks bones better than the hero. Again, sorry Prabhu Deva, a kickass angrezi “mem” alone can’t add zing to this Singh.

Akshay Kumar plays the simpleton sardar who thrives on a heart of 24-carat gold. So it doesn’t matter that he can’t speak a word of English (‘come’, ‘go’ , hold on, even an ‘I love you’ is off comprehensible limits). Obviously, Romania-returned Amy Jackson needs a translator (Lara Dutta) to gauge the magnitude of the mess she is in.

As per the story, (which lies blissfully buried under a dozen songs and Punjabi gags) Miss Jackson is in India to look for her long-lost mom. But what she does most of the time is break into a martial art performance. And it doesn’t help that her “saviour” Akshay fails to save himself. What he excels at, instead, is bonding with mommy dearest Rati Agnihotri. And as Amy wells up at the maa-son adhesive show, papa dishes out some gyaan — a man who loves his mother will never let his woman down. But hey, our girl doesn’t understand the language. So she ignores Akshay’s advances and does what she is best at — bashing up baddies and showing off her beach-ready bod.

Formidable among the villains is Kay Kay Menon (“I’m too good,” he reminds us just in case). Kay Kay wants to take revenge on Amy because she slapped him as he went touchy-feely while complimenting her curves.

Singh is Bliing’s humour hovers below the belt and has something to do with a sleepwalking, coconut-wielding Lara Dutta and the nether regions of the men around her.
Akshay grins through the silly script, and viewers bear it.
