All India inter-university cross country race on October 11

The Mangalore University and Alva’s College, Moodbidri, will organise an All India level Inter-University Cross Country Championship for men and women, at Moodbidri on October 11, said Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa.

Briefing media persons here on Wednesday, he said that the cross country race would be of 12 km and 6 km for men and women respectively. Around 1,600 men and 1,300 women runners are expected to participate in the race. Already 145 and 130 universities have registered under men and women categories respectively.

Transportation, accommodation and food will be arranged for all participating athletes and team managers. Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports Abhayachandra Jain will inaugurate the race at Swaraj Maidan at 7 am. Karnataka Athletic Association president Dr G Parameshwar, Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr Mohan Alva, Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa will be the chief guests.

The VC said that the Mangalore University would also host All India Inter-University Ball Badminton Competition for men on January 2, 2016.

Alva’s College Principal Dr Kurien said that the cross country race will pass through Swaraj Maidan-Mastikatte-Vidyagiri-Swaraj Maidan for men while for women it will be from Swaraj Maidan-Mastikatte-Swaraj Maidan. Three hundred officials and 400 volunteers are ready for conducting the event.

The winners in the race will be selected for World University Championship which will be held at Italy in March.

Dr Kishore Kumar C K, Dean, Faculty of Education, Director of Physical Education of Mangalore University said that the Mangalore University men’s team has 12 members with nine runners and in women’s team, there are nine members with six runners.

Punjabi University Patiala, Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak and Mangalore University had won first, second and third place respectively in last year’s All India level Inter-University Cross Country Championship for men held at M G University.
