A three-year-old died on Wednesday evening after he came under the wheel of an SUV in northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar, sparking angry protest by the victim’s relatives and neighbours.

The driver has been arrested at his home and the car confiscated, said police.
On Wednesday around 8 pm, Raunak was standing beside his father’s vegetable cart, playing with oranges when a speeding Audi Q3 hit him from the left and ran over him leaving his body splattered with blood, said an eyewitness.

“I saw my son lying on the road after being run over by the car. I picked him up and shouted for help. Some people on the street ran after the car and tried to stop him but he managed to flee. I then ran towards the nearby private hospital holding my child in my arms,’’ said Neeraj, father of the child.

According to eyewitnesses, the child died immediately after the accident, with his skull smashed, but his father – hoping for a miracle – still picked him up and ran to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

“The accident happened behind Gurdwara Sawa Singh on Outram lane, where the road is very congested. Unauthorised people and vendors have taken up the road, and the accident is the result of poor traffic and civic management,’’ said R Kumar, a local resident.

Police said the car is owned by Kartik Khurrana, a garment businessman, who lives in Outram lane, near the accident spot.

However, during the time of the incident, only his driver Sanjeev was in the car.

“We know the driver and the owner of the car. The driver has a habit of bringing expensive cars of his employer to his house here to impress his neighbours. Yesterday also, he was driving very fast and had brought the vehicle to his house just to flaunt it,’’ said Sunita, Raunak’s aunt.

Police have registered a case of rash driving and causing death by negligence under sections 279 and 304A of IPC.

Blood samples of the driver have been sent to laboratory to ascertain if the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
