Swamy backs Sena in opposing India-Pak matches

Last Updated 19 October 2015, 20:41 IST

Senior BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy on Monday came out in support of the Shiv Sena’s protest against resuming cricket ties with Pakistan, saying the country had also refused sporting engagements with Israel and South Africa from 1950 to 1990.

“Why play cricket with Pakistan when we during 1950-90 refused to play any game with Israel and South Africa and sickulars cheered?,” Swamy tweeted.

The BJP leader’s social media post came hours after Shiv Sena activists barged into the Mumbai office of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to protest against the meeting with the Pakistan Cricket Board to discuss the India-Pakistan bilateral series slated for December.

Owing to Sena activists shouting slogans after encircling BCCI president Shashank Manohar, the scheduled meeting with the PCB was deferred.

Swamy has not been in favour of resuming diplomatic dialogue with Pakistan suspended since Islamabad decided to engage with Hurriyat leaders here before holding foreign secretary-level talks.
