A man slipped into a cavity after earth caved in on the footpath near the North West side of the upcoming Sir M Visvesvaraya Metro station in front of the City Civil Court, off Central College, on Thursday.

Nandakumar, 55, was standing in front of the court when the ground under his feet suddenly caved in and he slipped and fell into it. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation officials who rushed to the spot found he had not suffered any major injury and gave him first aid. Nandakumar himself refused any hospital treatment.

The cavity, which formed around 1.45 pm, was one metre wide and around 1.5 metres deep. It was formed due to incessant rains in the past two-three days. The cavity was along the footpath portion of a bus bay that is under construction.

Metro officials immediately arranged to fill the cavity by pouring concrete into it. Officials said the surrounding areas will also be inspected and action taken to pre-empt any such formation and adversity.

Nandakumar was initially rescued by a goods auto driver, Shabeer, and his friend Wajid. Employed at a saree shop, he had come to Avenue Road on some work. Around 1.30 pm, he came to the court and was speaking on his mobile phone when the incident occurred.

“There were not too many people on the court premises on Thursday because it was a holiday. In case we had not seen him slip, I wonder what would have happened to the man,” Shabeer said.
