The election for chairmen of four standing committees — Taxation, Finance and Appeals committee; Town Planning and Development committee; Accounts committee; and Public Health, Education and Social Justice committee — of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) was held peacefully, here, on Monday.

While, JD(S) candidates S Balu, corporator of Ward 19 and Puttalingu, of Ward 49, were elected to Taxation, Finance and Appeals and Public Health, Education and Social Justice committees respectively, BJP candidates M K Shankar, of Ward 16 and M B Jagadeesh, of Ward 14, were elected to Town Planning and Development and Accounts committees respectively. Mayor B L Bhyrappa conducted the elections.

Balu won against Rathnamma, of Ward 5, and Puttalingu defeated R Nagaraju, of Ward 44. M K Shankar won against Suhail Baig, of Ward 43, and Jagadeesh defeated R Nagaraju, of Ward 44. All the elected chairmen will serve for a period of one year.
The members of the standing committees were elected unanimously on November 13 itself, in the presence of in-charge Regional Commissioner (RC) A M Kunjappa. Each committee has seven members.

‘Elections peaceful’

The heads to the committees were supposed to be elected during the first meeting on November 20, but due to certain issues, the elections had to be postponed.
It can be recalled that owing to lack of quorum and protest by Congress corporators, the meeting had been cancelled.

The Congress corporators, along with their supporters, had manhandled Mayor Bhyrappa and had locked the main entrance of his chamber. Even though the lock was opened by the MCC staffers, the agitators had staged a dharna in front of the Mayor’s chamber late into the night.

So, as a precautionary measure, the Police department had deputed nearly 100 policemen at the MCC.

After announcing the results, Mayor Bhyrappa said, “The elections were peaceful. No untoward incident occurred. All corporators and members of the committees cooperated.” The Mayor thanked the staff of the MCC, corporators and police personnel for their cooperation.
