The State-run Isolation Hospital (Epidemic Diseases Hospital) is likely to start functioning from the new building constructed near Swami Vivekananda Metro Station on Old Madras Road from next week.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Dr Ansar Ahmed, medical superintendent, Isolation Hospital, said that after a long wait, the new 100-bed hospital is ready for occupation and would start functioning from the new premises after a formal inauguration in a week.

The new building will have special and separate wards for patients suffering from rabies, tetanus, gastroenteritis and chickenpox, apart from general wards. “ Those with tetanus need to be in isolation and hence the tetanus ward is specially designed keeping these needs in mind. There will a total of 20 beds in this ward, out of which ten are exclusively for women,” said Ahmed.

During summer when gastroenteritis breaks out, the hospital sees at least 100 cases on any given day. This apart, patients with rabies and tetanus are usually sent to this government hospital for treatment.

For several years, the hospital was functioning from an old building, a heritage structure, which was in a state of utter neglect and often short-staffed. The new building was constructed almost three years ago but basic amenities such as water supply and electricity was not available.

The heritage building will be renovated and house the regional branch of World Health Organisation. It will also function as a Public Heath Institute.
