Waste-to-energy plant at Gorur opposed

Protests broke out at Gorur in Magadi taluk on Monday morning over the plans to set up a waste-to-energy plant by Satarem India for Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.

Hundreds of villagers staged a dharna and maintained 24-hour vigil to see that the company does not perform the ground breaking ceremony for the proposed unit that will process the garbage generated in the City.

Later in the night, there was tension at the spot when the protesters spotted a group of men moving around the area in cars. They feared that they were musclemen hired by the company to threaten the protesters.

When contacted, the jurisdictional Kudur police told Deccan Herald that the protesters mistook a group of drunk youth who passed by the area. The local police visited the spot and pacified the protesters to return home as it was late in the night.

The Special Commissioner of the BBMP (Solid Waste Management) Subodh Yadav said the local people had certain problems which need to be considered before operationalising the proposed plant.
