Russian diplomat attacks cop after hitting bike in Delhi

A Russian diplomat allegedly punched a Delhi Police constable following an  accident involving a car of his country’s embassy in South Delhi’s Moti Bagh area early on Wednesday.

He was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.  Although a case has been registered, but the embassy official was allowed to leave the spot as he enjoys diplomatic immunity.  The Delhi Police will submit a report on the case to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The incident occurred when a motorcyclist stopped for checking at a police barricade around 1.30 am. As he was parking his two-wheeler, he was hit by a speeding Honda Accord. “A Russian national came out of the car thrashed the motorcyclist. He also attacked constable Naib Singh when he tried to intervene. He then locked himself in the car when other policemen began to gather there,” said a police officer.

The injured motorcyclist, identified as Naveen, was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he underwent treatment for a fractured hand. A case under the Indian Penal Code was also filed with the South Campus police station based on Navona complaint.

The matter was brought to the notice of Russian embassy after which some embassy staff arrived at the spot and took away the Russian national.
