Cong not keen on fielding 2 candidates in twin cities

The Congress on Thursday is learnt to have authorised RDPR Minister H K Patil to see whether the party can withdraw its candidate from one of the two local bodies constituencies in Hubballi-Dharwad for the upcoming Legislative Council polls.

The party recently decided to contest both the local bodies seats in Hubballi-Dharwad. It has already fielded Srinivas Mane and Nagaraj Chebbi. But some party leaders, including Energy Minister D K Shivakumar, were said to be against the decision to contest both the seats. They opined it will lead to splitting of votes and the rival parties might benefit from it.

Sources in the party said Shivakumar and other ministers expressed their fear at the Cabinet meeting. The chief minister then asked Patil to examine whether the party should withdraw one of the candidates. Saturday is the last date for withdrawing the nomination papers. The chief minister and KPCC president G Parameshwara will take the final decision based on Patil’s recommendation, said the sources.
