A jilted man repeatedly slashed a 24-year-old woman’s face on Wednesday night near a supermarket in Subbanna Garden under the Vijayanagar police limits because she turned down his marriage proposal.

According to the police, the victim, Ranga Lakshmi alias Lakshmi, hails from Hosadurga in Chitradurga district and lives in a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Subbanna Garden.
She works for a private company and was assaulted by her relative Neelakanta, who is currently absconding.

Four years ago, Lakshmi was married to Madhu, a farmer in Hosadurga. But a year ago, the couple separated. Lakhsmi moved to the City a few months ago to make a living, said the police.
Neelakanta has been harassing Lakshmi for several years to marry him. Lakshmi got brief respite from him when she married Madhu. But when Neelakanta heard that they were separated he started to pursue her again and she continuously refused his proposals, said the police.

On Wednesday around 8 pm, Neelakanta found her on her way to the PG after work. He asked her again to marry him and she issued a warning instead. She asked him to leave, but he did not budge. He claimed that a relative of theirs was waiting near a close-by supermarket to speak to her. He requested her to convey to the relative that she had declined the marriage proposal.
Lakshmi agreed and went with him. As they neared the supermarket he took out a blade and slashed her face several times.

While attacking her, he accused her of acting too smart just because she was beautiful. He even told her to face the mirror after the attack.

When passersby rushed to Lakshmi’s aid, Neelakanta took to his heels, said the police.
She was taken to a nearby hospital and the police were informed. Lakshmi’s parents have come down to the City and doctors have declared her as out of danger. Her parents told the police that despite several warnings, Neelakanta had been pestering her for several years.
