A 40-year-old woman working as a sweeper in the JP Nagar police station was arrested for stealing valuables in the police station.

The suspect is identified as Devi, a native of Tamil Nadu. She was residing along with her husband and children in JP Nagar. For the past few years, she worked as a sweeper and did small jobs in the station.

She had managed to get a duplicate key of the cupboard inside the inspector’s room. All the recovered valuables and cash were kept inside the cupboard. Devi, who used to come every day, noticed the jewels and cash in the cupboard.
With the help of the duplicate key, the sweeper used to steal two to five gm gold once in a while, police said.

A few days ago, she noticed that the policemen had kept Rs 10,000 cash in the cupboard and she stole it. The next day, the police started looking for the cash to produce it in court in connection with a case, but could not find it. The inspector, along with the staff, examined the CCTV footage and found Devi stealing the valuables. They summoned Devi, questioned her and she confessed to the crime.

She told the police that her family was struggling to get one square meals a day and so, she resorted to stealing. The police arrested Devi and remanded her in judicial custody.

Cops’ humanitarian face

“Moved by her plight, the police themselves got her out on bail. We are trying to find out how she got the duplicate key of the cupboard. We will recover the stolen valuables soon,” said a senior police officer.
