The Basavanagudi police have arrested a couple on the charge of duping thousands of job aspirants by collecting money from them.

The arrested have been identified as Santana Gopalan and his wife Ambika. The police have seized Rs 24,400 from the duo. The couple made false promises of getting them jobs at various companies and collected money from the job aspirants, said the police.

Santana Gopalan hails from Chennai and is serving at an IT cell of a luxury car company. He connived with his wife to become rich overnight, added the police.

He entered into an agreement with a private college, paid the management Rs 10,000 and obtained permission to use the college ground to conduct a job fair. He issued advertisements regarding the campus recruitment drives by reputed firms that looked for hiring young graduates from engineering and business streams.

About 1,350 candidates from across the country attended the fair and Gopalan collected Rs 1.35 lakh from them.

Rs 100 entry fee
He had collected Rs 100 from each of the job aspirants as entry fee. Gopalan had even hired a few persons to conduct interviews to hoodwink the participants, said the police.

“One of the aspirants was not fully convinced about the way in which the recruiment drive was conducted, and he alerted us. We raided the place and seized documents and money,” said a police officer.

During interrogation, Gopalan admitted to having hatched a conspiracy to collect money from unemployed youth by organising a job fair.
