'Ward-level engineers should protect Palike property'

BBMP Commissioner G Kumar Naik instructed ward-level Palike engineers to take up the responsibility of protecting BBMP properties in the City and warned them of action in case of dereliction.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of all zonal chief engineers on Sunday, he said strict action would be initiated against BBMP engineers who do not take steps to protect palike properties that are being misused or damaged.

He said, “The cases of properties being encroached and misused are increasing of late. It seems that despite the increasing cases, the ward engineers are not taking any measures to reclaim them. The engineers should conduct an inspection everyday and take immediate action against people misusing property.”

Naik instructed the Palike officers to take the help of police to clear encroachments. Zonal joint commissioners along with chief engineers should take a lead in such cases, he added.

The commissioner told the Palike officials to take up precautionary measures to deal with problems that rise during the monsoons, such as overflowing drains and manholes, and stagnant water among others.

“Tenders should be floated to execute desilting of primary and secondary drains. The tender documents should be prepared within a week. Also, the engineers should capture images and record video of the places where desilting work is carried out. A technical committee would be set up to oversee the desilting works,” Naik said.

He also directed officers from the BBMP lake division to develop lakes, clear encroachments on stormwater drains and to ensure that drains surrounding lakes are desilted in order to prevent accidents during monsoons.
