Number of BBMP zones may increase from 8 to 10

Last Updated 01 January 2016, 20:11 IST

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike administration is contemplating increasing the number of administrative zones from the existing eight to ten. The consideration is based on the recommendation by the BBMP Restructuring Committee, which had suggested increasing the number of zones by another two.

BBMP Commissioner G Kumar Naik said there are discrepancies in the jurisdiction of the zones, which should be rectified by way of restructuring and increasing the number of zones. He said a proposal to this effect will be sent to the Urban Development Department (UDD).

Naik said, “Besides adding two more zones, we intend to remodel the existing zones. A proposal was made to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at a meeting convened by him. He had given his approval and directed us to submit a detailed proposal.”

He added that senior rank officials will be posted to head the zones. For filling the rest of the posts, a request will be sent to the State government to start the recruitment process.

The BBMP Restructuring Committee had called for public opinion on the formation of zones and citizens suggested the need for at least 12 zones. Based on public opinion, the restructuring committee suggested increasing the number of zones.

The creation of two new zones may create vacancies for 1004 new posts, Naik opined.
