Cabinet approves ILO resolution

Soon, it will become mandatory for the government to ensure that workers of unorganised sectors get proper wage and adequate social protection which are available to their counterparts in organised sector.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the International Labour Organizations(ILO) recommendations on the issue. The recommendations will be placed before Parliament for adoption.

The Cabinet approved the ILO recommendations on transition from informal economy to formal economy. It makes it mandatory for the state to adopt measures which make formalisation of the unorganised sector.

The recommendation which were passed in the International Labour Conference at Geneva in June, 2015 also prohibit informalisation of organised sector.

“The recommendation provides guidance to members to facilitate the transition of workers and economic units from the informal to the formal economy while respecting workers’ fundamental rights and promote creation, preservation and sustainability of enterprises and decent jobs in the formal economy and prevent informalisation of formal economy jobs,” said a government press release.
