Dosas galore!

Last Updated 08 January 2016, 18:37 IST

One can find several people thronging Sri Guru Kottureshwara Davangere Benne Dosa in Basavanagudi during the evenings, to savour its crisp ‘benne’ (butter) dosas, served with coconut chutney and potato.

Serving a limited menu, the eatery was started in 2002 and is jointly run by Shubha and her husband Mahadev, belonging to Kottur village in Ballari district. “My husband came to Bengaluru in 1995. He earlier worked as an electrical contractor and later started the joint,” says Shubha.

The popular items on the menu include ‘benne’ dosa, ‘kaali’ dosa, open dosa, ‘paddu’ (spicy fried idli) with groundnut chutney, ‘poha’ dishes like ‘nargis’, ‘girmit’ and ‘mandakki oggarane’ and chilli ‘bajji’.

“Our ‘benne’ dosa is fully made in butter and quite crisp while the ‘kaali’ dosa is soft, with no butter or oil in it. The pure butter is made from buffalo milk and especially sourced from the village,” shares Shubha.

She adds that the cooks who prepare the dosas are from Davangere and specialise in what they do. “They have been following the standard recipes and maintaining the same quality since 14 years. Besides, my husband and I taste everything before it is served to the customers. If we feel something is falling short, we make it a point to get it rectified then and there.”

While the place is open from 7.30 am to 1 pm and 4.30 pm to 10 pm, it is evenings that see maximum rush at Davangere Benne Dosa.

Office goers visit mainly till about 6 pm, and beyond that it is the families that come over to the place.

“Most people enjoy standing and eating here. However, now we have seating to accommodate about 20 people inside. Saturdays and Sundays are quite crowded over here,” says Shubha with a smile. The couple seem quite happy with the turnout at their small eatery.

Sri Guru Kottureshwara Davangere Benne Dosa is located at 49/1, Subbaraoshetty Road, Netkallappa Circle, Basavanagudi. For details, call 9448305384.
