JOIN USA 75-year-old woman has been killed while her grandson was injured when a clash broke out between two groups here during kite flying on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, police said today.
The two groups allegedly pelted stones at each other in Meera Datar Darga area here, they said.
The incident occurred last evening in Meera Datar Darga while some youth were enjoying kite flying on the terrace of a civic body community centre, some stones fell on the road from the terrace, leading to clash between two groups of youth, Bhadrakali Police Station inspector Madhukar Kad said.
Soon they indulged in pelting stones at each other and also damaged some vehicles in the vicinity, the officer said, adding that a boy along with his grandmother, who was riding pillion, was passing through the area.
The boy, identified as Ganesh Thakare was injured when a stone hit him, while his grandmother, Bababai Thakare, died of shock at Nashik civil hospital, he said.
The victims were resident of Shimpi Lane area in old Nashik.
Upon receiving an alert, Deputy Commissioner of Police N Ambika, DCP Avinash Bargal, ACP and 200 personnel rushed to the spot along with riot controlling van and brought the situation under control.
Police officials also discussed matter with local peace committee members and urged people to maintain peace.
The situation remained peaceful today, Kad said.
A case has been lodged under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 336 (act endangering life of others), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life of others), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and relevant sections of Criminal Law Amendment Act and Maharashtra Police Act, the officer said.
No arrests have been made so far in connection with the incident and further investigations were on.
