The residents of Hosalamma Extension, under the leadership of Town Municipal Council member Vasantha, staged a protest against a contractor for allegedly carrying out low quality underground (UGD) drainage work, here on Wednesday.

The protesters said that the UGD development work is being carried out from the last one year. Sand and cement used for curing are of poor quality. When people opposed this, manufactured sand (M-sand) was used. At this stage, many TMC member said that the contractor has not availed the permission to use manufactured sand for the work. Will the contractor mention in the report that M-sand is used as an alternative for sand, they asked.

The residents also alleged that poor quality sand is being used for the construction of manholes and pipelines and urged the contractor to use good quality sand.

Vasantha said that UGD works are almost complete in the town. But the assessment of the quality has not been done, except the visit of water supply and underground drainage board member Chandrashekhar to the work sites and suggested to follow the standard criteria. However, there was no improvement in the situation. Engineers are least bothered about the quality of the work. The construction of manholes was done in one or two hours. The work should not be carried out till sufficient care is taken while implementing the work, she demanded.

Santhosh Kumar, Yathiraj, Shivakumar, Yashavanth Kumar, Girish and Shivamurthy were present.
